If you are currently going through a divorce then are dealing with the heavy stress of having your family break up right before your very eyes. So obviously you want to know how to hold on to the threads of your family as much as possible. In this case I really do mean how can you as a father get custody of your kids.

Let’s face it the court systems seem to always favor the mother in the case of child rearing. Is this fair? No! is this even proven to be completely correct? Actually I do not believe it has either. However, with that being said you should start to prepare yourself fot the potential battle you are going to be put through by your spouse and her lawyer.

The first step in preparing for this child custody battle would be to know the laws of your state. Knowing ahead of time the laws that govern child custody will allow you to know what potential roadblocks you are going to face. Furthermore, having this information will also allow you to anticipate the potential tactics your spouse and her lawyer are going to throw at you. In this case knowledge really is power.

Secondly I would seek the best representation that you can afford. What I mean by this is to hire the best child custody lawyer you can reasonable afford. Sometimes you may not even need representation as you both can settle the matter outside of court in some sort of mediator fashion. However, even if you do pursue this route it is advantageous to still interview and perhaps keep a lawyer on retainer just in case.

Lastly I would do as much research as possible. IF you know what to expect in court you are far likely to be less stressed out. A more calm and measured demeanor will only add to your confidence and allow you to anticipate and think clearer. Doing your research ahead of time will allow you to prepare for the worst case scenarios that may get thrown in your face by your opposition.
